Week 6 & 7 Essay Questions
1.) Do you think artificial intelligence will be a significant problem in the future?
Artificial Intelligence is a vital instrument that will play a major role in our future. It will pave the way for humans to live a “simpler” life. But, nonetheless, this will be a double edged sword, because, it will take a lot of peoples jobs, for example, we can see this happening even in todays world. Currently there are millions of LIFT and UBER drivers who depend on these jobs to provide income for their household, but as we’ve noticed with big corporations such as Google and tesla, they are producing self driving vehicles and technologies that have immense potential from what we’ve seen so far and in a few years, self driving technologies are going to replace the typical driver who depended on these “taxi” services to provide income. Just like this, we’ve seen that artificial intelligence is playing a lot of roles in other avenues where the artificial intelligence will surpass what the average person is capable of doing. As we move into the future, artificial intelligence and robots will play a major part in shaping our future. In the Ray Kurzwell video, he brought it to my attention just how fast this artificial intelligence can “take over the world.” Not literally, but figuratively. Even if it will make life “simpler” in a sense, it will also make people in general more lazy and less intelligent because they will not have to think as hard or do as much as they normally would in the every day world. For example, kids and teens are already being consumed by cellphones, texting, and video games instead of reading books and playing outside. They are not stimulating their brains in the way they should be. Ray Kurzwell made a very eye opening statement saying that “the same technologies that are empowering us to reprogram biology away from cancer and heart disease could also be used by a bio terrorist to a biological virus to be deadly.” That showed me just how dangerous artificial intelligence can become even if it is supposed to be “helpful.”
2.) How has technology impacted your life?
It is easy to forget how technology has impacted the daily activities in my life, because I have become so used to being immersed in it. People often take technology for granted, because we do not recall a time when we did not have a particular technology, especially millenials. For example, I remember when I first started driving, I would not drive to many different places because I wouldn’t know how to get there, and now almost every single phone has GPS on it and it has become so easy to go anywhere and everywhere you want and it has become harder to get “lost” so to speak because in a sense we always have a GPS in our pockets. Also, finding a recipe has become as easy and simple as clicking a button, whereas, even ten years ago, we had to rely on cooking books, recipes printed off the internet, etc. Now a days, there’s an app for everything. Another example would be how I can keep in touch with friends and family through social media, you can look someone up on their facebook or instagram and know what they have been up to without having to personally reach out and ask them if you don’t feel like it, it has become a lot easier to be nosy in other people’s lives. I met my husband on the internet through a video chat, without technology I never would have met him and therefore I never would have had my son who is the absolute light of my life. I am very thankful for technology in those aspects even if I do think it will eventually have a negative impact on the world, it can be helpful nonetheless.
