1) Explain the virtual simulation theory of consciousness
Through most of the movies I found these key things that they were saying about virtual simulation and our brains.
“The lighting plays a trick,” “We can easily be duped,” “Consciousness is out our own virtual simulator,” and my favorite “We don’t have full and complete access to our own minds.”
Everything is due to awareness and it’s up to us too see what is really in front of us. For example there is something called a “Mobius strip,” It’s a simple strip of paper or material that is twisted one time and then both opposite sides connect together in the end. I think that would be like a few trails I have been on and I call them loops but that also do have twists and turns. So however many times you twist the material and if it’s an odd amount then it will always connect. I thought this video was so interesting so I watched some more about it and that showed an example of a man traveling all the way around on the strip and his outcome was that he had a mirrored image. We ask questions to our self if some things are really real, and having this form of virtual simulator helps us to cope. The advantage of having it in our conscious is that we can pick, choose, and replay what we want to see, how it plays out, and what happens at the end. We keep testing out theories very quickly in our own mind until the right solution comes up. Having consciousness means being alive and being at attention or aware of everything. So while all the neurons and then things inside the makeup of our bodies are working around the clock, our brain is controlling what we see and do.
2) How does the brain trick us and for what benefit is it for our generic survival?
Well our cells work together to make our brain function and be aware and observant. As Mrs. Patricia Churchland said, “The mind is the brain.” In the video “Wisdom tooth,” it explains the mechanism of how pain and messages are sent to the brain. It can basically trick us into thinking that there is no pain because of a substance that enters our body and the message gets sent straight to the brain. Like in a previous video I remember them stating that if our brain was to fully comprehend what truly goes on then I don’t think we could cope, because it would be too much to handle. The brain sets us up for what we need to be able to do to survive throughout the day, to eat, shower, and stay healthy and so on. Then it can do the opposite and make us see things that aren’t really there and convince us that a simple drone in the sky is really a spaceship.
