Week 3-Natural Philosophy and The Universe
Why is understanding physics and the general rules of the universe so important in doing philosophy?
It is important to understand physics and the general rules of the universe in doing philosophy because that interprets and demonstrates how the world functions. It expresses the details and answers to many things above what we normally don't question of nature. Scientist do different experiments (studies) to figure out the pattern to see what makes this universe function, more like how does it operate and what makes it operate the way it is functioning. Like in the book "Is the Universe really made of Tiny Rubber Bands?" explains a physicists which discovers four fundamental forces in the universe such as, electromagnetism, strong nuclear force, weak nuclear force, and gravity. If it wasn't for these discoveries, there would not be any further investigations on the operations of atoms and how the universe works etc. Based on general rules of older experiments (of the universe) it can be used for newer ones.
What is eliminative materialism? 3 examples
Eliminative materialism is the claim of the common-sense thoughts/understanding are to be deeply wrong and has no existence (eliminating) if it is not proven/explained fully . Like the video on Eliminative Materialism part one, if such subjects/concepts like biology, chemistry, mathematics, etc. cannot be fully explained then automatically it is said that God did it. Secondly, instead of teaching or speaking of ancient concepts, it has been replaced with newer discoveries for an example, instead of teaching about diseases being caused by spirits it is now said that the cause of these illnesses is because of bacteria and viruses ( a more physical explanation rather than spiritual).
